About Project:

“What are the Birds Thinking?” is realised within the scope of the 17th Istanbul Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) with the support of 2007-2036 Biennial Sponsor Koç Holding. The project focuses on children between the ages of 6 and 14.

The project aims to initiate a creative process to redirect the imagination of children and reconnect them with birds, nature and non-humans; and start multi-dimensional conversations about all that connects to the birds.

The project, which will be realised by the Istanbul Biennial and İKSV Alt Kat, is a collaboration between Education Reform Initiative (ERG), Hisar Schools, Teachers Network and Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum Learning Programmes and Today at Apple. Experts, artists, teachers, scientists from many different disciplines can also participate in the programme.

The project aims to initiate a creative process to reconnect children with birds, nature and non-human species, to make them think about the whole nature through birds and to stimulate their imagination. The project will also provide teachers with the opportunity to apply multidisciplinary learning methods under the topic of “birds”. Teachers, together with children, will be encouraged to make associations and connections and ask questions about climate change, modern industrial systems and societies, lifestyles, production and consumption, traditional ecosystems and indigenous societies. Children can participate in this project with the content they will produce around their answers to the questions in the guides. In order to participate in the project, children will upload their content in different formats such as text, image, photograph, audio or video to the form here.

Guides

Within the scope of the "What are the Birds Thinking?" project, two guides were prepared for "teachers" and "children and accompanying adults". The questions addressed to children in these guides touch on topics such as how birds think, how they see humans, the effects of environmental changes on their lives, their shelters, feeding habits, and movements. Questions such as "What do birds think?", "What would they say if they could talk to us?", "What can we learn by watching birds?" aim to develop children's listening, observing, concentrating, documenting and research skills.
